After leaving in Acadia, we had to stop in Freeport and visit L.L. Bean

The cashier suggested we eat lunch at a restaurant at the Freeport Town Wharf (it was located several miles away from town and we would never have gone without the recommendation). The seafood was fantastic, but the harbor reaked of fish guts.

We stumbled upon Delorme's world headquarters. If you don't know, they create and publish maps.

On the way to Alabama, we stopped at the Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest. It is one the few remaining stands of virgin forest in the southern Appalachians.

Madeline and I had a nice hike out to Andrews Bald; it is about four miles roundtrip from the Clingman's Dome parking lot.

Most of the bushes are blueberries. Apparently, this is a favorite dining spot for bears when the berries are ripe.

We went hiking on the Fourth at White Oak Canyon in Shenandoah Natl Park. There are a series of waterfalls with a couple of nice swimming holes. This was Emma's first hike where she did the majority of walking herself. Her favorite part was getting to pee in the woods.

It snowed about 4 inches last Sunday. Madeline couldn't wait to shovel our walk, the driveway and our neighbor's walk. I told her if she waited it would probably melt by the afternoon, but she insisted.

The snowblob lasted until Thursday; Emma kicked her way through the remaining pile of snow and declared him finished.

When we arrived at the lodge on Sunday, there were people ice fishing on this lake.

When we got back to Seattle, I took Dea to the Space Needle.

We stayed at a boutique hotel, The Edgewater, Seattle's only waterside hotel. Even though I got an incredible deal on the room through Priceline, it is easily the most miserable experience I've had with a hotel. The room was tiny and it had a fireplace you could not turn off even though the weather in Seattle was warm. We tried sleeping with the window open, but trains kept rumbling by. In the middle of the night I finally had to disassemble the bottom plate so I could turn off the pilot.

Despite that last night, it was an awesome trip. Does it surprise anyone that I am ready to move there?

We spent the morning taking our first cross country lesson, drove into town for a scrumptious taco lunch, tried to ski an "easy" four mile loop, quit after half a mile because I lost all feeling in my fingers, went back to the lodge and had a great time sledding. Dea said it was her favorite part of the trip. Don't watch the last video if you suffer from motion sickness.

When we knew that we were going to Seattle for the conference, and that Nana & Dadat were willling to keep the girls for an entire week, I knew I had to find us some place to go near North Cascades Natl Park. We signed on for a "learn to cross country ski" package at Sun Mountain Lodge in Winthrop, WA. In the summer it is a two hours drive from Seattle to Winthrop through the mountains, but you have to take a longer, 5 hour route in the winter. It was about at this point, a couple of hours into the drive, that the washer fluid lines in our 4-Runner froze (they didn't unfreeze until we were nearly back in Seattle three days later); it made for some really interesting driving considering all of the salt on the roads.

Dea's conferencs wrapped up Saturday morning, so we visited the Seattle Aquarium. Here's Nemo.

The morning of the 24th was finally clear. After breakfast at the Market, I walked up to the Space Needle and rode to the top; it might have been the best $16 I have ever spent at a popular tourist trap.

I took a ferry across Puget Sound to the Olympic Penisula. As you can see, the fog is still present.

Before we got to Seattle I had thought I would drive around Olympic National Park, but after studying the map I realized it is at least a three day drive and camp trip. I decided just to drive to the Pacific Ocean and I finally reached it in the little town of Westport. After snapping this photo I stopped at a restaurant on Main Street and had the best bowl of clam chowder ever. It was at this point I met my soulmate. He was in his late thirties, balding and not very attractive. I believe he was the husband of the restaurant's owner. We were sitting beside each other, watching a story about President Obama on CNN. I made some comment and he completed my sentence; then I completed his sentence. We went back and forth something like seven times, and I started to get weirded out, so I paid my bill and left. Dea thought she would like to meet him, but I am never going back to Westport.

I walked out to the water, but there was a nasty brown foam in it so I decided it would be best not to touch it. At this point I decided I needed to see mountains, so I turned around and drove 4 hours to Mt. Rainier. I got there too late to take any good photos, but when I first saw the bulk of the mountain as I drove around a curve I felt like I got slapped in the face. Mt Rainier is so unbelievably massive, especially compared to any of the Appalachians. I made it back to our hotel around 9pm; I drove about 11 hours that day.

I had planned on spending the entire first day exploring the city, but around 10am I decided I needed to see some mountains. I drove north to Mt Baker. This is the first view I had of the Cascade Mountains.

We were in Seattle because Dea was presenting at a conference, which left me a few days to explore the area on my own.

My body's natural rhythms fit into Pacific time really well (I tend to wake up at a normal time). I walked down to Pike Place Market for breakfast.

Next I walked along the waterfront. I usually don't care for birds, but this one seemed calm enough.

This is one of the ferries that crawl back and forth across Puget Sound. I'll take one the next day.

While we were there, Seattle was suffering from a temperature inversion. Basically it meant the fog was trapped around the city all day; I had to drive 70 miles before I got out from under it.

Dea & I got to take an adult vacation to Seattle at the end of January. This is a photo of Paradise Valley, where the Yellowstone River flows out of Yellowston National Park. I hope to live there someday.

I drove home from AL on Christmas Day, and Goob and I met in North Carolina for a late afternoon hike. We went to Max Patch, a 4000' bald just east of the Smokies. It was a beautiful day and the views in every direction were awesome. We decided to stay long enough for the sun to go down.

We went to the Smithsonian's Natural History Museum to see the new Sant Ocean Hall. The little girls probably liked running around on the mall more than walking around looking at dead animals.

Molly asked if this was where Mr. Bush lives.

Instead of driving into D.C., we parked at the Metro station in Vienna and rode in on the train. Definitely much easier than trying to find parking near the National Mall.

Dea was kind enough to allow me to go hiking with Goober. We decided to hike to the top of Mt. Rogers, the highest point in Virginia at 5729'. It was different than any hike I have done in the Appalachians; the majority of the hike was wide open and the only time we were surrounded by trees was when we reached the summit. It reminds me of photos I have seen of the Scottish Highlands.
One of the coolest parts of the hike were all of the wild ponies. This is a baby (left) and its mother.

You can see the top of Mt.Rogers through this gap.

There was a herd of a dozen ponies in this clearing. You're not supposed to feed them, but you could tell that rule is ignored by the way some of them will walk up and nuzzle your hand.

There are no pictures from day 8, the last day of travel. We drove through Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and made it home before dinner. After almost 4800 miles in eight days we were home and I will never drive that far that fast again (maybe).

The only exciting part of day 7 was the two hours we spent in traffic going through Chicago. We drove through southern Minnesota (yawn), Wisconsin (snooze), Illinois, Indiana and into Ohio.

The Sears Tower. Madeline took at least 50 pictures as we drove through the city, but this one captures what we saw for two hours. We sat at one toll booth north of the city for almost 10 minutes; I had a nice conversation with the attendant.

This tollbooth represented freedom. It was the last one south of Chicago and after we passed through the traffic was gone.

On Day 6 we headed south from Spearfish into the Black Hills. We passed through Deadwood (I'm a big fan of the HBO series) and stopped at Mt. Rushmore. It was really interesting in a surreal way. I've seen the monument on so many things in my life that I was expecting these enormous heads erupting out of the ground, but they actually seem smaller in person. I suppose most pictures focus entirely on the heads, so you never see the large mountain that surrounds them. I usually don't like to read the exhibits in National Park visitor centers, but I enjoyed reading every word at Mt. Rushmore's.

We made it into Minnesota that evening, and there was a large thunderstorm that overflowed the hotel's pool during the night.

At Deandra's suggestion, we stopped at Wall Drug in Wall, SD. We counted over one hundred billboards along the 50 miles of interstate before you reach it.

This was my trip highlight, Baronette Peak (10,354') near the northeast entrance of the park. There were dozens of waterfalls cascading down the face of the mountain. If we had the time I would have loved to take a nap in the meadow, listening to the sound of the wind and water.

This is the Clark's Fork River canyon. It reaches 1200' in depth.

This was our first view of the Great Plains. We were in the Big Horn Mountains - the last peaks over 8,000 until you reach the Alps.

This is how Mad spent the last four days of the trip, unless she crawled in the back to take a nap.

Mom took the hotel shuttle from the hotel in Bozeman to the airport at 5:30am. Madeline and I slept late, starting the pattern of the next few days. We would drive well into the night (Mad would usually fall asleep in the back seat), reach a hotel, sleep late and repeat. We would not have been able to do this if Dea and the little girls had come along, but then, they probably wouldn't have enjoyed all the driving anyway.

After leaving Bozeman we drove back to Yellowstone, stopped at Tower Falls, drove through the beautiful Lamar Valley and exited at the northeast entrance. We continued across Wyoming, crossing the Big Horn Mountains (like the Wind River Range, they were a revelation) and finally reached Spearfish, SD for the night. After the sun went down the bugs were hitting the windshield in such large numbers that it sounded like rain.

This is the Devil's Slide, on the road from the North entrance of Yellowstone To Livingston, MT. What is most interesting is that the different rock layers were laid down horizontally and faulting tilted the ground vertical.

This was probably the highlight of the trip for Mad; a buffalo was leading a line a vehicles down the other lane.

This is the Lamar valley. We didn't see any wolves, but all the lumps on the far side of the river are buffalo.

On day 4 we broke camp in the Tetons and drove to Yellowstone. Since this was Mom's last day with us, we decided to hit some of the highlights: Old Faithful, the Hayden Valley, the Lower Falls and Mammoth Hot Springs. The eruption at Old Faithful was not as powerful as it was when Dea and I saw it in September. We saw lots of buffalo, but no other animals.

We finished the day by going out of the north entrance of the park and driving to Bozeman, MT. It felt really nice to stay in a hotel with hot showers and a soft mattress.

Lots of snow in Wyoming's Wind River Range. The Winds were a revelation; I have read about them in my Backpacker magazine for years, but now that I've seen them for myself I have to go back and explore them.

Dea and I were here in September, but there was almost no snow on the peaks.

This was an easy driving day. We started in Colorado, only 25 miles from the Wyoming line. We reached the highest point on our entire trip, 9400 feet, soon after we crossed into Wyoming. We spent the night at the Gros Ventre campground in Grand Teton National Park.

Lunch at a rest area in Kansas

This wind farm was the most interesting sight in Kansas.

We drove through Missouri, Kansas and most of Colorado on day 2. I was really hoping to see the Rocky Mountains much earlier than we did (a certain line from Dumb and Dumber kept running through my mind), but the day as overcast so the mountains did not appear until we were 40 miles east of Denver. We did briefly catch a glance of what turned out to be Pike's Peak earlier, but I had look at a picture of the mountain before I could confirm it.

We spent the night at a KOA near Ft. Collins, after a really nice meal at Cozzola's Pizza in the downtown. I think Ft. Collins is the new town I am planning on moving my family to.

Great Western Adventure-Day 1, 6/21

This is the car I originally rented to drive to Yellowstone with Madeline and Mom. It would have gotten 32-35 mpg, but it was too crowded before we even added Mom's stuff. The little girls liked it, though. We had to hang around Charlottesville until the car rental place opened so we could trade up. We had originally planned on leaving by 7am, but we did not get out of town until 9:20.

We took I-64 through Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky and Indiana, with a stop in Louisville to pick up Mom at the airport. Oh yeah, Madeline and I were sick; I had a fever that had developed on Friday and Madeline is the one who infected me.

We had originally planned a camping at a KOA on the west side of St. Louis, but I didn't feel like sleeping in a tent. Unfortuantely, all the hotels within 60 miles of the city were full.
